THE TIME IS NOW
The Funny Sad of Your Life™®
Saturday, 26.10.2024, 19:30 h, Alte Feuerwache, Bühne, Köln
Ensemble Garage plays music by and with Mathias Monrad Møller, the world premiere of his songs The Funny Sad of Your Life!
Do you also enjoy the benefits of capitalism – but have a guilty conscience when you think about it? With The Funny Sad of Your Life!™®, the German/Danish composer and singer Mathias Monrad Møller, together with the Ensemble Garage, takes this dilemma of late-capitalist affluent societies as the starting point for a series of ironic love songs. His ‘Lovesongs’ are based on poems that Møller has compiled from advertising slogans: cheap poetry that becomes ironic hymns to capitalism. Møller’s dystopian ‘songs’ resonate back to us from a future in which capitalism no longer exists, but you long for it; because you were worth it. A time we enjoyed, albeit with a guilty conscience.

In its second concert series this year, Ensemble Garage presents compositions of contemporary music in a chamber music setting. In addition to a world premiere by Meike Senker, the ensemble will perform works by Elena Mendoza, Gerard Grisey, Lee Hyla, Diana Rotaru and Annegret Mayer-Lindenberg.
The unusual quartet line-up (trombone / clarinet / saxophone / viola) enables an exploration of the most diverse genres of current contemporary music, as well as an encounter with very heterogeneous composers. Based on Meike Senker’s new work, the ensemble presents solos, duos, trios and quartets in this concert, which thus function as a prism of so-called contemporary music from Gérard Grisey to the present day.
